Canada’s workplaces have changed significantly in the past 25 years – no more so than in Ontario. Unions have a diminished role, especially in the private sector. Labour and employment legislation is struggling to remain relevant and to strike an appropriate balance between encouraging business activity on the one hand and, on the other hand, protecting legitimate employee expectations and entitlements. Courts and adjudicators are having similar challenges navigating an appropriate course, which sometimes leads to conflicting decisions and surprising results.

This webinar will look at some of the key issues that face all workplaces – whether or not unionized. We will examine the current state of union organizing activity and what non-union workplaces may lawfully and appropriately do to minimize the potential for unionization. Finally, we will consider some of the more interesting legislative and adjudicative changes in recent years and consider what may lie ahead in the next few years.
